The goals of the “American History in International Context” program are:
Goal 1: To strengthen teachers’ understanding of the basic facts of traditional periods of American history, while imparting a sense of interplay of international and domestic political, economic, geographical, social, cultural and intellectual influences that shaped U.S. history.
Goal 2: To provide teachers training in the use of primary materials, including documents, diaries, photographs, material artifacts and literary works, as well as methods to enhance student literacy, analytical skills, and interpretive skills.
Goal 3: To train teachers in the use of technology in accessing primary materials to broaden their own and their students’ knowledge of the past.
Goal 4: To create among teacher participants an enduring community of historians promoting discussion, improvements in U.S. history instruction, and teachers’ independent study and scholarship.
Goal 5: To enhance students’ understanding of traditional American history.
