WWPL to Present “Hot Dogs, Lemonade, and Coney Island” Program
April 22, 2010
The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum today announced that it will host two sessions of a “Hot Dogs, Lemonade, and Coney Island” program for girls ages seven to twelve on Saturday, April 24, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Presidential Library. During the program, participants will hear excerpts from “American Girl” books about American Girl character Rebecca Rubin’s various adventures and activities. Rebecca Rubin is an American Girl character based in New York in 1914, when President Wilson was in office; therefore, the program will help demonstrate what life was like for a child during Wilson’s time. The participating girls will learn to play jacks, go to the movies, and take a trip to Coney Island, where they will experience an arcade, including hot dogs, lemonade, and various side shows.
The “Hot Dogs, Lemonade, and Coney Island” event is not endorsed by, sponsored by, or affiliated with American Girl Brands, L.L.C.
WWPL staff designed and are leading the program. There will be two identical two-hour sessions, one from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and the other from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., for 25 girls each. Both sessions are full with a waiting list.
American Girl Brands, L.L.C., owned by Mattel, Inc., has introduced a line of historical characters with books, dolls, and accessories, and the American Girl magazine for young readers. For more information about American Girl, visit the company’s website at www.americangirl.com.
This event is a part of the WWPL’s educational outreach program. The Presidential Library regularly hosts area students for interactive programs that meet Virginia Standards of Learning requirements. In the “Journey Into History” program and the “Professor, President, Peacemaker” program, students tour President Wilson's birthplace and participate in group activities in the Woodrow Wilson Museum. The WWPL also hosts two sessions of a summer “Journey Into History” camp, a three-day interactive history camp for seven- to ten-year-olds with a different historical theme each summer.
