The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library today announced that its historic gardens are featured in a “Road Trip to History” documentary, “Historic Gardens of Virginia,” to be shown on the local PBS station, WVPT, tonight at 8:30 p.m.  The documentary will include a 1920’s Garden Party held at the Presidential Library in May, 2009.  Guests in period costume danced to 1920’s music performed by the Rhonda Sager Trio of Strasburg, Virginia.  The documentary also included a portrayal of President Wilson reciting one of the President’s favorite limericks.   

“Road Trip to History” is produced by Oak Tree Productions of Kearneysville, West Virginia, in conjunction with Virginia and West Virginia Public Television.  Six other historic gardens in Virginia are also featured in the documentary.  The Presidential Library is selling copies of the documentary in the President’s Shop for $18.00.  The documentary is likely to be shown again on local PBS stations, possibly in the fall.  It has already been shown on the Richmond and Charlottesville PBS stations.  

The Presidential Library’s terraced boxwood gardens below President Wilson’s Birthplace, the Presbyterian Manse, were designed in 1933 as one of the early restoration projects of The Garden Club of Virginia.  The gardens are maintained and have been improved over the years by The Garden Club of Virginia and are featured as part of the Club’s Garden Week tours each April.
