Thomas Jefferson
Poplar Forest
Presidential Retreat

Thomas Jefferson designed and built Poplar Forest, a notable octagonal house on his 4000 acre Bedford County Plantation. Overwhelmed by an almost perpetual round of visitors at Monticello, Jefferson escaped several times a year to his retreat at Poplar Forest.  Along with Monticello, Poplar Forest is one of two houses designed by Jefferson for his own use.  The property was purchased by a nonprofit organization, Jefferson's Poplar Forest, in 1983 and first opened to the public in 1986.  Open to the Public.
