Many presidents have direct ties to Virginia through birthplaces, homes, presidential retreats and gravesites, but Virginia’s Presidential connections do not end here.  A number of fathers and mothers of future Presidents and future First Ladies were also born in Virginia.

Augustine Washington, Father of George Washington; born in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1694 and died in King George County, Virginia April 12, 1743.

Mary Ball Washington, Mother of George Washington; born in Lancaster County, Virginia 1708 and died near Fredricksburg, Virginia April 25, 1789.

  (LEFT) Martha Dandridge Washington, Wife  of   George Washington and the first First Lady of the United  States; born in New Kent County, Virginia June 21 1731 and died at "Mount Vernon," Virginia May 22, 1802.

Peter Jefferson, Father of Thomas Jefferson; born in Chesterfield County, Virginia Februrary 29, 1708 and died at "Shadwell," Virginia August 17, 1757.

Jane Randolph Jefferson, Mother of Thomas Jefferson; buried at "Monticello," Virginia.

First Lady Martha Skelton Jefferson, Wife of Thomas Jefferson; born in Charles City County, Virginia October 19, 1748, died at "Monticello," Virginia September 6, 1782 and buried at "Monticello."

James Madison, Sr., Father of James Madison; born March 27, 1723 and died at "Montpelier" in Orange County, Virginia February 27, 1801. 

Eleanor Conway Madison,
Mother of James Madison; born in Caroline County, Virginia January 9, 1732 and died at "Montpelier" in Orange County, VA February 11, 1829.




(LEFT) First Lady Dorothea (Dolley) Todd Madison, Wife of James Madison; born May 20, 1768, died July 12, 1849 in Washington, D.C. and buried at "Montpelier," Virginia.

Benjamin Harrison, Father of William Henry Harrison; born in Charles City County, Virginia April 5, 1726 and died in Charles City County,Virginia April 24, 1791.

Elizabeth Bassett Harrison,  Mother of William Henry Harrison; born on the Etham estate in Charles City County, Virginia December 13, 1730 and died in Charles City County, Virginia 1792.

John Tyler, Sr., Father of John Tyler; born in James City County, VA on Februrary 28, 1747 and died at "Greenway," Charles City County, Virginia January 6, 1813.

Mary Armistead Tyler,
Mother of John Tyler; born in York County, VA in 1761 and died at "Greenway," Charles City County, Virginia April 5, 1797.



(RIGHT) First Lady Letitia Christian Tyler, first wife of John Tyler; Born at Cedar Grove Plantation in New Kent County, Virginia November 12, 1790, died September 10, 1842 at the White House and buried at Cedar Grove Plantation.

Thomas Lincoln, Father of Abraham Lincoln; born in Rockingham County, Virginia January 6, 1778 and died January 15, 1851.

Nancy Hanks Lincoln, Mother of Abraham Lincoln; born in Cambell County, Virginia February 5, 1784 and died October 5, 1818.

(RIGHT) First Lady Ellen Herndon Arthur, Wife of Chester A. Arthur; born in Fredricksburg, Virginia on August 30, 1837 and died January 12, 1880.

  (LEFT) First Lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson,  second  wife of Woodrow Wilson; a direct descendent of colonial Virginia settlers as well as the famous American Indian Poahontas, through Pocahontas' granddaughter Jane Rolfe Bolling; born in Wytherville, Virginia on October 15, 1872 and died December 28, 1961.
