Mark trained to be a medieval historian at the University of Wisconsin, but along the way, worked in a number of archives and law libraries with files and collections. After he decided not to become a teacher, Mark attended the University of North Carolina to study to be a Special Collections Librarian. He worked with rare books at the medical school of Washington University in St. Louis and then James Madison University, where he learned about managing archives.
